NEW IMPROVED VOERMOL MOLASSES MEAL

NEW IMPROVED VOERMOL MOLASSES MEAL A WINNER IN EVERY RESPECT

In what way has Voermol’s Molasses Meal changed?

  • Voermol Feeds has succeeded in developing a ‘new’ molasses meal which is highly mixable, exhibits much less clotting and is still high in energy. The physical appearance of this molasses meal shows a lighter colour and a ‘looser’ structure.
  • In order to facilitate easier handling, Voermol Molasses Meal is now available in a convenient 25 kg bag.

Benefits of Voermol Molasses Meal

  • Voermol Molasses Meal is known for the fact that it drastically improves the palatability, flavour, physical appearance and texture of any feed or lick, if included in at the prescribed rate.
  • It lowers dustiness, prevents wind losses and decreases the separation of feeds and licks.
  • Due to its high Vitamin B and trace element content, the product makes a valuable contribution towards rumen health, which in turn leads to a healthy appetite as well as improved digestibility and utilisation of feeds and grazing.
  • According to Morrison (1967) the nutritional value of molasses energy is as high as 75 to 95% of that of grains, provided that no more than 10% is included in a ration. The energy in molasses meal is found in the form of highly soluble sugars that complement the starch energy of grains in licks and complete rations. Thus it is an excellent source of energy to feed in conjunction with soluble protein sources such as ureum in licks and feeds, as well as plant proteins on green grazing.

The uses of Voermol Molasses Meal

  • Lofgreen and Otagaki (1960) found that the inclusion of 10% of molasses in a feedlot ration for beef cattle as a partial replacement for grain meal, led to a 10% improvement in daily weight gain compared to the control ration which contained only grain and no molasses. This means that Voermol Molasses Meal can be included in the feedlot ration for beef cattle at a rate of 15% (on a 90% dry matter basis), replacing hominy chop, maize meal or other grains.
  • Voermol Molasses Meal can replace up to 50% of the grains in production licks and up to 100% of maintenance licks for sheep and cattle.
  • Based on the research of Lofgreen and others, it is accepted that in a dairy cattle ration, the inclusion molasses in stead of maize meal and other grains at a rate of 7.5% of the total ration (100% DM-basis), will result in the same production outcome. In other words, Voermol Molasses Meal can be included in a total mixed ration at a rate of 7.5% (on a 100% DM-basis) and in dairy meal at 12.5 to 15% in order to replace maize meal or other grains. Dairy cows should perform just as well or better at these inclusion rates than on a complete grain-based ration. As a rule of thumb, it can be accepted that up to 2 kg of Voermol Molasses Meal can be fed per cow per day.
  • In the case of Voermol SS 200-based sheep finishing rations, 5 to 10% of Voermol Molasses Meal can be included to replace grains. These inclusion rates should yield the same or better results than in the case of only grains.
  • At a 5 to 10% inclusion rate, it also serves as an excellent binding agent in feed pellets.
